Why Should You Collect Rare Books?

stack of rare booksThe reasons for collecting rare books are almost as varied as the type of people collecting.  People collect from the love of books, a passion for a particular author or genre, an interest in a particular historical period, and the list goes on and on.  Some people collect rare books for the investment value only but most collectors have a passion for books that goes beyond intrinsic value.

When people collect rare books, for whatever reason, they do look for specific qualities in the books they acquire.  Let’s face it, nobody collects the worst specimens of whatever collectible – you always wish to obtain the best examples to add to your collection.  To that end, you will only want to get books that are in the best possible condition.  Each crease or flaw diminishes both the beauty of the book and the value of it.

Some people collect volumes with special bindings like some that were created with incredibly detailed engravings on leather binding, sometimes with real gold trim.  These types of rare books not only have collectible value but are also display worthy so can be a very classy part of the décor when displayed correctly.  For those types of displays, be very careful that the books are not crowded and are protected from damage from light, dust and air.  If they are displayed on a bookshelf, one must be careful not to overcrowd the books as it risks damage by making it difficult to remove the book.

For whatever reason you choose to collect rare books, be sure to research the ins and outs of collecting and what to be aware of.  This will help you in learning how to find the volumes you want and how to care for the rare books that you do acquire.  If you want to collect books from a specific author, genre or time period, you should also have knowledge of that subject to properly appreciate your collection.
