What’s my book worth? That’s a question asked by many newcomers to the world of book collecting. Many collectors accumulate books for reasons other than financial gain. But, sometimes asking the worth of a book is a necessary and legitimate question. The condition of the book is the most important factor in value. After that, it might be important if the book is a first edition, and whether or not it is signed by the author. Finally, there is a short laundry list of other factors that will help to determine a book’s value.

The condition of the book is the most important determinant of value. About all other aspects, this one thing along can make a huge difference in the appraised value. There is a standard grading scheme for book condition that you would do well to learn and apply. One of the clearest indicators of a book’s condition is the presence of an undamaged dust jacket. Since dust jackets are so easily damaged, pristine jackets are remarkably rare, and can triple the value of a book.

If your book a first edition? Sometimes it’s easy to determine, most of the time it is not. There are books written on this subject alone that you should consult for further information. In many cases, if a book is signed by the author, its value will be greater. Of course, how much greater will depend on the popularity of the author as well as the number of books he or she was in the habit of signing.

Other factors in the mix for book valuation include scarcity and demand. If a book is scarce, but no one cares, then it will not have a great value. Anything that increases demand for a book will likely increase its value.

You’ll notice that age is really not a factor at all in book values. Although beginning collectors (or raiders of grandmother’s attic) place a premium on age, for serious book collectors, age is just a number.
