What’s So Special About First Editions? How to Sell Your Used Books without Giving Them Away

How To Identify First Editions

First editions are highly sought after by serious book collectors and hobbyists alike. Their place in the history of ideas lends a mystical quality to many first editions. But identifying a first edition is more complicated than you might think. One reason is that publishers are constantly changing their format. There is no standard presentation of which edition you might be holding at any given time. But there are a few tricks that can make identifying first editions a little bit easier.

First, it is best for any book collector to specialize in a particular genre or subject area. This is usually more rewarding and enjoyable as you explore subjects deeply rather than at the surface level. In terms of recognizing first editions, narrowing your focus will give you an advantage. Most subject areas are dominated by a few publishers. As you continue collecting books within your specific interest, you will begin to learn the conventions that each of “your” publishers use to denote their editions. Soon, confirming the authenticity of a first edition for your favorite subject area will become almost second nature.

It’s not always complicated to figure out if your book is a first edition. Sometimes publishers print “first edition” right into the book. Before the mid-19th century, this wasn’t always something that could be trusted. But in the last 75 years or so, it’s a pretty good sign. Be careful though; sometimes book club editions call themselves first editions.

There are actually entire books written on recognizing when a book is truly a first edition. (That should give you a hint about how complicated it can be.) Several of these books actually include a couple of pages that present the guidelines for confirming a book’s status. If you decide to buy one of these guides, you can make a copy of these helpful pages and take them with you to the book shop.

If you’re dreaming about finding a perfect first edition for your collection, then you should apply these hints to your search. Accept that it will sometimes be difficult to figure out if you have found a real first edition. But I’m sure that there are helpful book collectors in local groups or online forums who would love to help you solve the mystery.
